Listening to great podcasts like, say, GardenFork Radio, is a challenge when you’re working with your hands.  If you’re like me, the cord is a continual problem.  Nothing is more annoying than having a hoe handle tangle in your headsets and then ripping them from your ears.  I even managed to cut the cord on my dangling headsets once while on my knees planting bushes. They’re a bit pricy, but if you’ve got a Bluetooth phone, then OT’s Tags (reviewed below) are the ticket for snag-free listening while you work.  The earbuds are attached to each other by a soft, cloth-covered, wire (antenna) that loops behind your neck, so when you’re not listening to GardenFork Mike go on and on and on about ice fishing (;->) the “tags” can be twisted and dropped down the front of your shirt..like dog tags, get it?
  2. The right earbud has a control button to start, pause & stop the track as well as a volume rocker that doubles ( if you hold it down) as a “skip to next” podcast/song switch.  There is also a (pretty poor) mic in the right earbud.  Phone calls will interrupt your Bluetooth tunes and you can answer by pressing the button on the right.  Tune continue automatically after a phone call.OT Tags uses a mini-usb port for charging.  I get 5-6 hours of listening on a single charge. If you prefer to listen on an iPod, an optional Bluetooth dongle is available.  OT also offers a new headband-type Bluetooth set, but I haven’t tried it.
  3. Bogs Boots

I’m not going to steal this NPR piece, Ode to My Sturdy Rubber Boots but you should read it…or listen on your OT Tags headsets (above).  The link to the ode is below.
  4. There is nothing in the world that makes life easier for a gardener than quality waterproof, insulated, rubber boots.  My favorites are Bogs (link below) but there are several on the market.  I like the mid-calf style with handholds on the sides and a big lug on the back of both heels for kicking them off easily.  The tops are neoprene, so these boots are lighter than most and have more “stretch,” good for those of us with huge calves.  Pants cuffs in or out, the neoprene tops are great.

Since I got some really great boots, no job is too trivial to go to the trouble of slipping into them.  I’ve even spotted the more mirror-like finished riding heel Bogs boots at the supermarket.  These Dressage ring boots look good with jeans and hardly anything like my rugged work boots.
Shop around, they’re all over that interwebby thing.
