I have a diagram to post on how to build the beds, meanwhile viewer mail:
If I’m making a “1 tiered” raised bed, do I need to kill the grass underneath the raised bed first or can I just placed the raised bed in the spot I want, over the grass, and then just pour composted soil to fill up the bed and get to planting?
Answer: you can just dump in the soil . it will kill the grass. what i do get is grass blades popping up along the edges of the raised bed that are sent up by the grass growing along side the bed. i just pull them out.

If you are worried about weeds you can “cut” out the sod where the raised bed will go, but the chances of weeds growing up 1-2foot is fairly slim; if you do get weeds it is more likely that they blew in from above. Eric–enjoyed this episode VERY much; we hadn’t thought of the linseed oil before for some reason, so we avoided raised beds after our first ones cracked and warped so badly.
