We have the same swamp smell issue with our old top loading washer. What is the stuff you used to do the initial cleaning before you switched to powder? I think we need some.

i used Simple Green, its a concentrated cleaner, i think the important part is that you find a cleaner that is a degreaser, because that is what the moldy stuff is growing on.

Love the podcasts-my parents had beehives back in the 70's. Back then you could order bees from the Sears catalog and they were delivered via regular mail. My dad likes to tell the story of getting a phone call at 5am one Saturday from our post office. He says the postal worker called and said, "we have a package for you and it sounds like it's alive, and it's leaking all over the place. Come get it now!" He got there and the sugar water they pack with them had all leaked out because the "This End Up" side was of course face down. But we got many other packages after that and never had another problem.
