      Eric,
Thanks for the "rant" about dealing with contractors! My husband has been an HVAC contractor for 15+ years and I would love to add one thing that happens to him to your rant. Don't call a contractor to give your homeowner's insurance company an estimate for replacement of damage and then have a cheaper contractor do the work so that you can keep the extra $$$. If you are getting 3 estimates and then turning them in yourself, fine, we'll take the chance that we don't get the job, but if you are having us work with the insurance company, including signing affadavits, we expect to get the job. Plus, the insurance company will often send us a 1099 at the end of the year for services rendered, that we didn't do! Makes for major headaches!!!!!
