I am one of the biggest self-treaters (with 8 cats, 5 dogs, and 3 large parrots you have to be), but want to stress the point you made about going to the vet for eye issues. There are ointments that treat eye infections that specifically say not to use on corneal abrasions. It could cause serious problems including blindness.

One of my cats had an infection and the vet gave us some ointment. About a week later one of the dogs had an eye issue. Thankfully I read the ointment and it stated not to use on abrasions. Leaning on the side of caution, I took him to the vet and sure enough he had a scratch on his eye. Very glad I didn't use the ointment I had in the cabinet!

@KS, good point, there are over the counter treatments for some issues, but i err on the side of caution with eyes, we've only got two of them.

      thx, eric.
